North Carolina Health Careers Access Program

 

Mission

 To increase the number of African-Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans and/or individuals from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are trained, educated, and employed in the health professions.

 

Program Components

Health Careers Centers: Campus-based activities to identify, recruit, motivate and strengthen academic backgrounds of minority students. Health career centers are located on the campuses of :

  Elizabeth City State University

North Carolina Central University

University of North Carolina at Pembroke

Fayetteville State University

North Carolina A&T State University

University of North Carolina at Greensboro

 

Programs Offered

 Clinical Work-Study Summer Health Program (CWSSHP): 7 week professionally supervised summer clinical work-learning experience in a healthcare agency provided for minority pre-professional health science students.

 

Health Careers Information and Enrichment Workshops (HCIE): Hands on outreach program for minority and disadvantaged students (middle junior and highschool) and parents on health careers.

 

Health Professions Forum (HPF): Held two to three times per year on the campuses of various North Carolina colleges and universities. The forums give students an opportunity to learn about different health profession programs in North Carolina.

 

Inspirational Speakers in Science (ISIS) Lecture Series: Held one to two times per academic year in conjunction with the Health Professions Forum and serves to expose secondary and undergraduate college students to African-American, Native American and Latino/Hispanic American health professionals and scientists of national prominence.

 

Science Enrichment Preparation (SEP) Program: An eight week honors level science enrichment program for minority and economically disadvantaged college students (primarily rising sophomores and juniors) who want to enter schools of allied health, chiropractic, dentistry, medicine, optometry, osteopathy, pharmacy, podiatry, public health, and veterinary medicine.
