Rigdon “Bob” Smith shared a lifetime love of farming and for the North Carolina State University Wolfpack. Bob was born in 1933 in Alamance Country where he grew up in the farming community of Brown Summit and the Monticello area. After graduating from Monticello High School, he attended NC State University (then “State College”) and went on to serve in the United States Air Force for four years.
Bob began his working career in sales for Jackson Beauty Supply. Although this is what he did to earn a living and provide for his family, his lifelong dream was to be a farmer. In order to achieve his dream he invested his money into land and farm equipment and he started farming tobacco on a part-time basis. After 18 years in sales, he was ready to devote himself on a full-time basis to farming and the cattle business. At its peak, the farm produced 75 acres of tobacco along with 50 to 75 head of cattle.
Bob was very active in his church and community. He was a member of the Guilford County Cattleman’s Association, a member of the Liberty Masonic Lodge #714, 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite and a member of the Oasis Scottish Shrine. Bob was a devoted family man to his wife Shirley; his children Vicky, Jan and Kalan; and their respective families.
Bob loved life and was a friend to everyone who knew him. His family feels that this endowment will be a wonderful tribute to his memory, knowing that “Bob” will forever be able to reach out and help NC State students obtain their degree within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
