The goals of this endowment are to encourage young people from the areas nearest and dearest to her family’s heart to attain higher education degrees and, equally important, to abstain from alcohol and illegal drug use.

Awards from this endowment will be made to one or more students by the Dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, or his or her designee, in accordance with the established procedures for awarding merit-based scholarships.  To be eligible for the scholarship, students must be in the pre-veterinary program in the Department of Animal Science.

Awards will be for one academic year and may be renewable.  Criteria for scholarship recipient selection and renewal:

  • Recipients will be notified that, in addition to maintaining satisfactory academic performance as determined by their Department Head, they must also abstain from illegal drug and alcohol use.  If recipients violate NC State University’s written policies on alcohol and drug use, they will forfeit the scholarship.
  • Recipients must join and actively participate in the NC State Campus Community Coalition, a campus and community-based partnership established to address alcohol and other drug-related issues concerning NC State students (if the Campus Community Coalition has been dissolved, recipients must actively participate in a similar organization or endeavor through the NC State Student Health Center).
  • Preference will be given to students from Laney High School in North Carolina.  If no students from that high school are eligible, then preference will be given to students from New Hanover County, Brunswick County and Pender County, North Carolina, then to students from other areas in North Carolina.  If no students from North Carolina meet the criteria, then out-of-state students will be considered.
