Dr. Allen Foegeding and the Department of Food Science have established an endowment within the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation, Inc., to be known as the Dr. Peggy Foegeding Memorial Food Science Scholarship Endowment. This endowment is created to remember and honor the late Peggy Foegeding, Ph.D., beloved mother of Eva and Nora and wife of Allen, who passed away in January 2002 after a long fight with breast cancer. Peggy was an internationally renowned teacher and researcher in the area of Food Microbiology. Her love and skills of teaching earned her awards nationally and in the Department of Food Science at North Carolina State University. She is deeply missed by the friends, students and family members she touched with her life.
This endowment provides scholarship awards for undergraduate students enrolled in the Department of Food Science in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at North Carolina State University. Recipients of awards from this endowment are selected by the Scholarship Committee in the Department of Food Science in accordance with established procedures for awarding merit based scholarships. Dr. Allen Foegeding serves as a member of this committee as long as he so desires. Awards shall be for one academic year and may be renewable if the recipient maintains satisfactory academic progress as determined by the Head of the Department of Food Science or his or her designee. Criteria for selection are:
a. students must be majoring in any area of Food Science and have attained the rank of rising junior or senior
b. students may be transferring into a Food Science major from within or outside NC State University
c. students must be involved in Department of Food Science activities
d. students must compose and submit a one-page essay on why they have chosen Food Science and what they will do with their degree
