W. Wesley Carroll '56: B.S. Agricultural Economics
After High School and three years in the Army I was graduated in January 1956 with a BS in Agricultural Economics. We lived on Kent Road which is off of Western Boulevard in Raleigh. Our property extended almost to some of the Experiment Farm land that lay on both side of the boulevard. I wonder how many students at State ever used a saddle horse to get to classes? I did numerous times. There was a small frame building located at the rear of the old Animal Husbandry building and I used it to stable my horse while I attended classes in that part of the campus.
After graduation I was employed by Nationwide Insurance Company in their Raleigh Regional Office. I started as an Automobile Underwriting Trainee and then progressed through to become a Senior Underwriter. After three years I was transferred to their Home Office in Columbus, Ohio and promoted to Staff Underwriter. After two years I was transferred again to the Annapolis Regional office and promoted to Division Manager. Two years later I was promoted to Regional Underwriting Manager for the Annapolis Region (Maryland, Delaware, DC).
I left Nationwide in 1967 to join Colonial Penn Insurance Company in Philadelphia, PA as their Vice President, Underwriting and Administration. In that position I participated in the design and marketing of the Driverplan 55+ auto insurance program for the AARP. During my time with Colonial Penn I completed the requirements and examinations to be awarded the designation of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) by the American Institute for Property Casualty Insurance.
In 1972 I joined the General Reinsurance Group as President of The National Insurance Company of S.C. I designed and marketed an insurance program to electrical generating companies for the additional expenses sustained when one of their generating plants went offline.
During this time period I purchased a dairy farm in Saluda County SC. We grew to a milking herd size of over 200 cows and land under cultivation to almost 1000 acres. This enterprise was sold in 1975.
In 1976 I joined the foreign division of the American International Group as their Vice President – Auto Insurance for the Asia-Pacific Region. I was based in Tokyo, Japan and later in Manila, Philippines. My territory covered the countries around the Pacific rim from Japan to New Zealand plus all of the many island territories scattered through the south Pacific ocean. In 1982 AIG transferred me to Nairobi, Kenya as their East Africa Regional Vice President. Part of my duties included holding in my name 51% of the stock of the Uganda American Insurance Company and serving as the resident director of that company. The other 49% of the stock was owned by the government of Uganda. Imagine sitting across a conference table in the heart of Kampala from a representative of the Ugandan government during the chaos immediately following the downfall of Idi Amin. By the way, the next time anyone buys a can of Del Monte pineapple look on the label for the country of origin. If it shows Kenya, I insured the 10,000 acre plantation where the crop was grown, the machinery used to harvest and the cannery that processed the fruit. In 1985 I transferred to the Home Office of AIG in New York City as Domestic Vice President of Commercial Transportation Insurance. I retired from AIG in 1988 and moved to Norman, OK.
I joined Commercial Insurance Services, Inc. in Oklahoma City, OK as Vice President-Marketing. This agency sold insurance exclusively to commercial trucking companies throughout the U.S. In 1992 I was named President of the agency. I retired (again) in 2002 and established my own consulting company, Wes Carroll & Associates, LLC. My wife, who also holds the CPCU designation, is also my business partner. She holds a BA degree in Music Education from Augusta State University
We provide Risk Management consultant services to two very large trucking companies. I established captive insurance companies for each and serve as President and Director of one of these captives. I am also a director of Grand Prairie Casualty, a domestic property and casualty insurance company.
