THE BUSINESS OF BENEFICIAL WASTE

Waste doesn't have to be wasted.

Through innovative reuse and recycling programs, waste and waste by-products from individuals, communities and industries can be useful and, in some cases, turned into marketable products. The North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service is offering two regional conferences to provide information on the beneficial use of waste.

The conferences will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the county extension center in Pitt County on Sept. 9 and in Iredell County on Sept. 11. The sessions will be geared toward waste generators, waste users, local officials, consultants and other professionals with an interest in successful waste management.

"The intent is to help people, businesses and communities identify and develop potential waste-based businesses," said Dr. Roger Crickenberger, conference co-chair and associate state program leader with the Cooperative Extension Service at N.C. State University.

Conference presenters will cover a variety of topics including regulatory requirements, the economics of waste reuse and successful examples of effective waste management programs from the municipal, agricultural and business arenas.

The conference is sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service and N.C. State's Animal and Poultry Waste Management Center. The registration fee is $10 and will include lunch and a copy of the conference proceedings. The registration deadline is August 22. To register or for more information, call Dr. Crickenberger or Renee Ring at (919) 515-3252.
