MONACO NAMED FELLOW IN SCIENCE SOCIETY

Dr. Thomas J. Monaco, professor and head of the Department of Horticultural Science at North Carolina State University, has been named a Fellow in the 33rd annual class of the American Society for Horticultural Science (ASHS). This national organization has more than 4,500 members, including research scientists, educators and other professional horticulturists in the US and more than 100 other countries.

Election as a Fellow of the Society is the highest honor that the Society can award to its members for contributions to horticulture. The total number of Fellows of the Society cannot exceed 10 percent of the elegible membership.

Dr. Monaco began his teaching and research career in 1967 as an instructor in the Department of Horticultural Science. He was promoted to associate professor in 1983 and full professor in 1977. In 1988 he took on the position he now holds.

Monaco is known nationally as an expert in horticultural weed control. He and his graduate students published more than 65 articles in refereed journals. He has been recognized by several societies for his contributions to teaching, research and service; these include the Fellow and Outstanding Teacher Award from the Weed Science society of America; the Weed Scientist of the Year Award from the Southern Weed Science society of America, the Weed Science Society of North Carolina, and many more honors for scholarship, research and distinguished service.

Dr. Monaco was born in Kearny, New Jersey and now lives in Cary with his wife Jenny.
