Taking part in the September 10 dedication of the Ernest and Ruby McSwain Extension Education and Agriculture Center in Lee County are (above photo, left to right) N.C. State University Chancellor Marye Anne Fox; Ruby Vann Crumpler McSwain; John Hall, Cooperative Extension’s Lee County director; and Dean Jim Oblinger of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. The 170,000-square-foot center and the nearby Worthy House were open for tours after the dedication.

Mrs. McSwain donated 300 acres and the Worthy House to the N.C. Agricultural Foundation Inc. for Extension’s Lee County Center. She also set up endowments to aid research and extension activities and provide for the furnished house’s upkeep.

More than 200 private donors contributed $300,000 to pay for the center’s auditorium and other improvements. The center also houses other county, state and federal offices. The Worthy House will be used for small meetings and social events.
