The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences was well represented among participants breaking ground for the new A.E. Finley Center for Education and Research at Historic Yates Mill County Park. Pictured above at the July 9 ceremonies are (from left) Dr. Thurman Grove, head of the Department of Zoology; Dr. Johnny Wynne, interim College dean; Dr. John Vandenbergh of the W.M. Keck Center for Behavioral Biology in the College and a longtime mill volunteer; and David Woodward, Department of Zoology technician. The 16,000-square-foot building will provide a central facility from which to greet mill visitors. Built in 1756, the old mill operated as a water-powered gristmill for 200 years, till it ceased operation 50 years ago. Now the restored and operable mill is center of a new 574-acre park, scheduled to open in 2005. In cooperation with Yates Mill and N.C. State University, the park will provide numerous educational opportunities.
