N.C. State University and College of Agriculture and Life Sciences benefactors David Murdock and Bobby G. Wilder were named award-winners at the 2008 conference of the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association (NAADA) in Kona, Hawaii.
Murdock received the 2008 NAADA Ruby C. McSwain Outstanding Philanthropist Award, and Wilder was recipient of the 2008 NAADA Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Murdock, the owner of Dole Food Co., is working with universities across North Carolina to develop the North Carolina Research Campus at Kannapolis — a high-tech research center that will focus on developing a better understanding of human nutrition and foods with enhanced nutritional qualities. He was honored by the NAADA in recognition of his contributions to agriculture, health and to society at large, as well as his support of the advancement of scientific knowledge in horticulture, food science and related fields. To those ends, he has committed $1 billion of his personal resources and his leadership at local, state, national and international levels toward the creation of the NCRC. He has also invested $150 million in the creation of a research foundation to fund grants for research at the NCRC facilities.
Recently Murdock made a $2 million gift to help staff the NCRC with N.C. State faculty members who will work to develop more nutritious fruits and vegetables. The gift will be matched with $1 million from the North Carolina Distinguished Professors Endowment Trust Fund. The total will be used to create endowments that will fund three David H. Murdock Distinguished Professorships
Wilder is a 1959 N.C. State graduate in science education who co-founded Century Framing Limited. He is a longtime volunteer at and donor to CALS’ nationally acclaimed JC Raulston Arboretum. The arb’s visitor center was recently named for him to honor the more than 1,000 hours of volunteer service he has contributed to the JCRA in the past 32 years. For more than 10 years, he has served as a silver sponsor for the JCRA Gala in the Garden. He also has given more than $50,000 in outright gifts and committed more than half a million dollars in planned gifts to support the arboretum and the College.
Additionally during the NAADA conference, the CALS Agricultural Institute’s alumni newsletter and the College’s 4-H program were recognized in publications and projects categories.
The NAADA is an organization that provides education, support and recognition for individuals dedicated to expanding resources for land-grant and other colleges of agricultural sciences and related programs.
