Nelson receives International Biometric Society Kempton award

Dr. Larry Nelson, emeritus professor of statistics and forestry, who served as the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ assistant dean for International Programs, has received the Rob Kempton Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Development of Biometry in the Developing World.

Nelson is the second recipient of the award, presented by the International Biometric Society for service to the profession of biometry in the developing countries.

He retired from N.C. State University as emeritus professor of statistics and forestry in 1989, after 25 years with the university. A biometrician, he spent the following 10 years consulting in statistics in China, India, South America and the Caribbean. He returned in 1999 to CALS International Programs, retiring from that position last year.

Nelson was honored for his contribution to the development of the society and the field of biometry in Central America and the Caribbean and his commitment as teacher and consultant in biometry to the wider scientific community, particularly in lesser-developed countries. He received the award July 15 in Dublin, Ireland.
