The fun, food and fanfare at the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Tailgate 2009 included everything from all-you-can-eat barbecue to face-painting to up-close reptile encounters – with accompaniment from the N.C. State Wolfpack pep band. CALS alumni, friends and faculty members mingled among the balloons, games, educational exhibits from CALS departments and silent auction offerings at the Sept. 19 event in Dorton Arena at the N.C. State Fairgrounds.

The annual CALS Tailgate reunion is the flagship event for the CALS Alumni and Friends Society, with proceeds from the silent auction supporting the society’s scholarship endowment in the College. More than $8,500 was raised for student scholarships during the event.

The N.C. State mascots, Mr. and Ms. Wuf, along with the Wolpack band, led the crowd in a rousing pep rally before heading over to the football game at Carter-Finley Stadium, where N.C. State defeated Gardner-Webb 45-14.

“With more than 1,200 in attendance this year, the CALS Tailgate is still the biggest alumni event held at N.C. State,” said Scott Troutman, executive director of the CALS Alumni & Friends Society. In all, he said Tailgate 2009 was a rousing success, complete with great exhibits, games, giveaways, weather, food – “and a Wolfpack victory!”—Terri Leith
