Cassius S. Williams of New Bern, a graduate of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has been appointed to a four-year term as a member of the North Carolina State University Board of Trustees. The University of North Carolina Board of Governors approved the appointment on March 21. Williams previously had been appointed by the Board of Governors to fill the unexpired term of Vernon Malone, who resigned his seat after his election to the state Senate.

“Cassius is a longtime friend of the university who has served two terms as president of the Board of Directors of the N.C. State Alumni Association and currently chairs the building committee. He is a former member of the N.C. State Board of Visitors,” said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox in announcing Williams’ appointment. “I am pleased to welcome Cassius to the board.”

Williams has also served the university on the Wolfpack Club Board of Directors, the Park Scholars Selection Committee, the Chancellor’s Circle and the executive committee of the N.C. State Foundation.

“The Fox era is an exciting time for the N.C. State family,” said Williams. “I look forward to having the opportunity to participate as a Trustee in the execution of the vision Chancellor Fox has for enhancing the excellence of N.C. State.”

Williams earned a bachelor of science degree in animal science from the university in 1969. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farmers Home Administration (FmHA) from 1969 to 1993, the last 12 years spent as a community development loan grants officer in the New Bern district. In 1993, he left FmHA to accept a position with State Farm Insurance as an agent in Greenville.

His community service activities include serving as past secretary and board member of the New Bern Civitan Club; past treasurer and board member of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Lower Neuse; member of the Town of River Bend Planning Board; member of the New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors; and chairman of the Craven County Chapter of the Wolfpack Club.
