Dr. Joseph A. Phillips
passes away in March

Joseph A. Phillips

Dr. Joseph A. Phillips, a longtime agricultural and environmental education leader with the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at N.C. State University, died March 10.

Phillips served as assistant director of the Cooperative Extension Service for community and rural development from 1982 until 1984, when he assumed responsibilities for agriculture and natural resources as well. He retired from N.C. State in 1989.

Phillips’ efforts focused on developing North Carolina agriculture and improving the quality of the state’s natural resources. He oversaw programs that helped clean waterways, provided clean water for municipalities and improved lives and livelihoods for citizens of rural North Carolina.

He provided leadership for “Managing for Tomorrow,” a program to assist financially distressed farmers.
