Duplin farm donated to N.C. State
n March 27, the 611-acre Williamsdale Farm in Duplin County was officially turned over to N.C. State University during a ceremony at the site.
The farm, located at 7624 N.C. 41 S., was donated by sisters Frances Carr Parker of Kinston and Eleanor Carr Boyd of Charlotte, who inherited the land from their parents, Dr. and Mrs. Henry C. Carr. The farm will be known as the Williamsdale Farm Agricultural Extension and Research Facility and will be managed by N.C. State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service in Duplin County.
The two sisters donated the farm to N.C. State in hopes that it would continue to be used for agriculture.
“As many of you know, farmland preservation is a priority for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N.C. State and the N.C. Agricultural Foundation,” said Dr. Johnny Wynne, interim dean of the College.
The Williamsdale Farm has been in the Williams family for 258 years and was originally granted by King George I. Until recently, there had never been a registered deed for the farm because it had never changed hands. A deed for the land is now in place, according to Ed Emory, Duplin County Extension director.
“We look forward to the many opportunities for agricultural research this facility will provide to our faculty and students. Please accept my heart-felt appreciation for your generosity,” Dr. Steve Leath, interim director of the N.C. Agricultural Research Service, told the donors.
“From 4-H to Family and Consumer Sciences to our many traditional agricultural rograms, the Williamsdale farm will provide many opportunities for the citizens of Duplin County and indeed North Carolina,” said Dr. Jon Ort, director of North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service.
Others from N.C. State who participated in the dedication ceremony were Keith Oakley, executive director of college advancement; Dr. Joseph Zublena, director of county operations for the Cooperative Extension Service; Mac McNeil, director of University Field Laboratories; and Kathy Kennel, executive director of the N.C. Agricultural Foundation.
