Humenik, biological and agricul-tural engineer, dies in March

Frank J. Humenik, professor in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and coordinator of CALS Waste Management Programs, died March 28 in Raleigh. He was 68. In the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N.C. State University, he directed research to develop, evaluate and demonstrate animal production/waste management techniques that protect water quality, minimize odor and support sustainable production. He was the author of more than 175 professional papers, research reports and popular articles on water quality and waste management, nonpoint source control, constructed and natural wetlands and watershed management. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he received bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in civil engineering from the Ohio State University. A registered professional engineer in Ohio and North Carolina, he was a member of numerous professional societies and environmental quality groups, serving as chairman for the majority of them. His many awards and honors include Progressive Farmer's 1975 Man of the Year in Service to N.C. Agriculture; the 1993 Presidential Distinguished Service Citation, American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE); 1994 ASAE Fellow; 2000 International Honor Award, USDA Foreign Agricultural Service; and the 2000 Academy of Outstanding Faculty Engaged in Extension, N.C. State University.
