Faculty, students rewarded for fund-raising efforts

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences implemented a new recognition program in April with its inaugural Faculty and Student Organization Resource Development Awards, sponsored by the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc. Board of Directors.

Dean Jim Oblinger presented the awards during the joint luncheon of the North Carolina Agricultural, Dairy and Tobacco Foundations. The five $500 awards included two Faculty Resource Development Awards, one Faculty Team Resource Development Award, one award for Retired Faculty Resource Development and one in recognition of the efforts of a College student organization.

The first individual faculty winner was Dr. Brinton A. Hopkins, Department of Animal Science. He was honored for his efforts in the development and success of the North Carolina Dairy Youth Foundation, which has raised nearly $200,000.

The second individual Faculty Resource award went to Dr. Robert Anholt, associate professor of zoology, founder and director of the W.M. Keck Program for Behavioral Biology. Anholt led efforts in securing the $800,000 Keck grant to establish the program, shepherded it through its early evolution into a center, and led efforts in leveraging Keck monies to obtain additional support. Funds currently available for research and training are approximately $8 million, and the program spans three departments representing both the life sciences and agricultural components of the College.

The faculty team award went to the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS): Dr. Nancy Creamer, Dr. Keith Baldwin, Dr. Frank Louws, Dr. Paul Mueller, Dr. Mike Linker, Dr. Michael Wagger and Dr. Mary Barbercheck. This team was honored for success in securing more than $970,000 in funding from a variety of private sources to further research, extension and teaching efforts in sustainable agriculture.

Dr. William T. Fike, professor emeritus in the Crop Science Department, received the Retired Faculty award for his activities in recruiting funds to benefit students in the College. As co-chair of the College’s Campaign for N.C. State Students, he was instrumental in the College’s campaign exceeding its $15 million goal by more than $4 million. Fike has also personally established three endowed scholarships in the College.

The Student Organization award was presented to the Agricultural Institute Club, represented by Benton Johnson, president, and faculty advisers Dr. Allen Beals and Dr. Herman Sampson. Nearly $6,000 was raised by the club to benefit areas including Agricultural Institute Scholarships, the CALS Scholarship for Hurricane Floyd victims and the Hunters for the Hungry activity.

The luncheon also served as the occasion for the announcement of the Norfleet L. Sugg Endowed Scholarship in the College. Sugg, a foundation board member, presented a check to Dean Oblinger in support of the endowment.
