Two College of Agriculture and Life Sciences students who have received prestigious national scholarships were recognized at N.C. State University’s Honors Baccalaureate and Celebration of Academic Excellence on May 17. Meredith Michelle Price, a graduating senior in biochemistry, was honored for receiving a Gates Cambridge Scholarship for graduate study in England at Cambridge University. Catherine M. Ward, a rising junior majoring in chemical engineering and biochemistry, was cited for receiving a Goldwater Scholarship Award for the 2001-02 academic year.

Price is one of only about 120 students worldwide who were named to the inaugural class of Gates Cambridge Scholars, a scholarship program established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Recipients are chosen based on academic ability and leadership potential. Price, of Ellicott City, Md., graduated May 19 as a class valedictorian with a 4.0 GPA. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Chain and Golden Key, she was also captain and co-MVP of the women’s volleyball team and recipient of this year’s Kay Yow award. She will study the history and philosophy of medicine for one year at Cambridge, then enter medical school at Wake Forest University.

Ward, of Apex, is a Caldwell Scholar, a member of the University Scholars Program, Phi Kappa Phi and Phi Beta Kappa. She hopes to ultimately obtain a Ph.D. in genetics or genetic engineering. The Goldwater Scholarship was established to foster and encourage outstanding students to pursue a career in mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Selection is based on academic merit. Nationwide a total of 302 Goldwater scholars were selected this year.
