Van Dyke wins UNC board teaching award

Dr. C. Gerald Van Dyke of Raleigh, Alumni Distinguished Undergraduate Professor of Botany in N.C. State's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has been honored with an Award for Excellence in Teaching from the UNC Board of Governors.
Van Dyke is one of 16 educators - one from each UNC system campus - who were presented with Awards for Excellence in Teaching by UNC President Erskine Bowles and Board of Governors Chairman J. Bradley Wilson May 12. Winners received a prize of $7,500 and a commemorative bronze medallion.
Van Dyke specializes in mycology - the study of fungi - and plant/host interactions. He has received a number of awards for teaching and advising excellence since arriving at N.C. State in 1969, including a Teaching Fellow award from the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture, an Outstanding Adviser Award from the College, and election to the university's Academy of Outstanding Teachers.
Van Dyke received his bachelor's degree in botany from Eastern Illinois University and his master's and doctorate in plant pathology from the University of Illinois.
