The N.C. State chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the honor society of agriculture, recognized a faculty member, three alumni and a benefactor of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences as new initiates at its 2006 initiation awards banquet in April. Dr. Julia Kornegay was honored as a faculty initiate; E. Carroll Joyner, Michael A. Luther and David F. Weinstein were alumni initiates; and Joseph O. Taylor Jr. was an honorary initiate. All were honored for distinguished service and leadership.
Kornegay is head of the Department of Horticultural Sciences in the College. She holds two N.C. State degrees, a bachelor's in floriculture and master's in plant pathology, as well as a doctorate in plant breeding and biometry from Cornell University. She serves on the N.C. Agriculture and Life Sciences Research Foundation steering committee.
Joyner, formerly with Golden Corral, founded the N.C. Cattlemen's Association, which supports beef cattle research at N.C. State. Joyner earned his 1956 B.S. degree in animal industry, now named animal science. In 1994, he received the Watauga Medal, N.C. State's highest non-academic recognition.
Luther, vice president of high-throughput biology at GlaxoSmithKline, received his B.S. degree in biology with a concentration in biochemistry from N.C. State in 1978. He serves as an adjunct faculty member for the Department of Molecular and Structural Biochemistry. He was the College's 2002?-?2003 Distinguished Alumnus for Life Sciences.
Weinstein, a retired businessman and former mayor of Lumberton, is a fourth-term senator from the 13th District, representing Hoke and Robeson counties. He is a 1958 graduate of the College. In the legislature, Weinstein has backed Nickels for Know-How, an agricultural referendum held every six years. The money raised goes to the Agricultural Foundation, which in turn distributes the funds through research and extension activities, scholarships, fellowships, faculty support and professorships.
Taylor of Murchison, Taylor and Gibson, PLLC, is a co-chair of the College's portion of the Achieve! Campaign. He is a member of a group that contributed valuable beach property to the College. He and his wife, Ginger, were named Outstanding Volunteers at the CALS 2002 Donor Gala and honorary CALS alumni in 2002.
