Racing for awareness - and a laugh

Shedding suit jackets and rolling up their sleeves, a handful of College and university administrators took to the N.C. State brickyard on a sunny March afternoon to race tractors - pedal tractors, that is.

The light-hearted competition was a highlight of Agriculture Awareness Week, an annual educational event hosted by student agriculture fraternity Alpha Zeta.

The lineup featured Dr. Johnny C. Wynne, dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences; Dr. Ken Esbenshade, CALS associate dean and director of Academic Programs; Dr. Larry Nielsen, N.C. State provost; Dr. Tom Stafford, N.C. State vice chancellor for student affairs; and Larry Wooten, president of the North Carolina Farm Bureau.

With elbows extended and knees up to their chins, the competitors attempted to weave through a series of cones while atop toy tractors built for riders about a quarter their size. The competition, which drew uproarious laughter from the crowd largely composed of surprised students, ended in a tie between Nielsen and Stafford.
