About 100 youths and adults participated in a statewide summit on Students Eating Smart and Moving More, held May 5-7 in Greensboro. A total of 24 county groups participated in this first-ever summit, which brought teens and adults together as advocates for healthy eating and physical activity in North Carolina's schools and communities. The program is a partnership of the State 4-H Project and 4-H's 2005 TRY-IT! Obesity-Overweight initiative, the state Department of Public Instruction's Child Nutrition Services, and the state Department of Health and Human Services. County groups returned home from the summit to implement a program to improve the health of citizens in their communities.

As another example of Cooperative Extension's involvement in improving the heath of North Carolinians, six family and consumer sciences agents were among those participating in the Move More Scholars Institute: North Carolina's Course for Physical Activity Professionals, also held in May. Agents attending were Margaret Allsbrook, Arthenia Booth, Ann Simmons, Phyllis Smith, Sandi Sox and Robin Taylor. All participants learned to collect data, conduct needs assessments and advocate for specific policy and environmental change strategies.
