Wake County students with an interest in attending college to study agriculture or agribusiness will benefit from a new scholarship created in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, N.C. State University. The Wake County Farm Bureau Agricultural Scholarship Endowment was established June 6 in the College's North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc.

Dr. Johnny Wynne, dean of the College, hosted the signing of an agreement between the Wake County Farm Bureau and the College at the Brickhaven Building on the N.C. State campus. Representing the Wake County Farm Bureau were Jackie Thompson, president; Richard Jenks, vice president; and William Upchurch, secretary/treasurer.

Dr. Ken Esbenshade, CALS associate dean and director of Academic Programs, also participated, along with Terry Wood, vice chancellor for University Advancement.

The endowment will be used to provide merit-based scholarships for students from Wake County with an interest or background in agriculture or agribusiness who are planning to attend an accredited college, university or community college in North Carolina.

"This is another example of how the agribusiness community has stepped up to enable students to attend N.C. State," said Esbenshade. "It will make a difference for the students, giving them a chance to be successful the rest of their lives, so I thank you on their behalf."

Defining another potential impact of the scholarship, he added, " We have in the College more than 300 majors in agribusiness management who will contribute to the state's economy when they graduate."

After presenting Wynne the check to fund the endowment, Thompson said, "It's been a desire of ours for years to give back to the youth of Wake County, to be able to create funds for young people in agriculture. It thrills us to have this great opportunity to set up endowments and give back to youth what has been given to us."
