Student members of the Agribusiness/NAMA Club have established a new scholarship endowment in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, N.C. State University. The endowment agreement was signed March 20 in the Nelson Hall office of Dr. Jon A. Brandt, head of the CALS Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

During the ceremony, CALS student Karen E. Brandt, president of the Agribusiness/NAMA Club, presented $1,000 to kick off fund-raising steps to fully endow the scholarship. The endowment is being established through private contributions to the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc.

The endowment will provide scholarship awards for undergraduate students enrolled at N.C. State University. Recipients are selected by club members and are recommended to the scholarship committee in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. Criteria for awarding the merit-based scholarship include membership in the Agribusiness/NAMA Club, leadership in club activities and other endeavors, and good standing as a student in the College.

According to club co-advisers Bob Usry and Guido van der Hoeven, the club scholarship will grow to become one of the top honors presented annually from within the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics. In April, Usry said, the first Agribusiness/NAMA Club scholarship was awarded to CALS student Tonya L. Dunn of Coats. Dunn is a sophomore in agricultural business management and will serve as the 2007-08 president of the Agribusiness/ NAMA Club.
