This year's annual Gala in the Garden at JC Raulston Arboretum was the arb's best fund raiser to date, pulling in almost $80,000, according to the event's organizers.
Colorful auction-tent covers in "daffodil yellow, sublimely lime, pink posies and regal purple" echoed the arb's splendid natural floral displays. As the Southern String Band contributed lively old-time music, attendees browsed their way through gourmet treats and entered their auction bids.
Dr. Dennis Werner, arboretum director, was honored at the gala for being named J.C. Raulston Distinguished Professor. Werner, a faculty member in the Horticultural Sciences Department, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was recognized for his many achievements, including the development of several late-blooming, frost-resistant peach varieties grown across North Carolina.
