CALS student among 2007-08 Goldwater Scholars

A student in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is among four N.C. State University undergraduates who have won prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships.

Warren Perry
Warren Perry of Wendell, a junior majoring in biological sciences, was selected as a Goldwater Scholar for the 2007-08 academic year, along with junior Jennifer Boyd of Chesapeake, Va., a biomedical engineering major; junior Jennifer Ricks of Wilson, a biochemistry and chemistry major with minors in genetics and religious studies; and sophomore Joe Morrow of Brevard, a mechanical and aerospace engineering major.

N.C. State is one of only seven universities to have four students selected as Goldwater Scholars this year. The N.C. State students are among 317 recipients of the honor selected from a field of 1,110 mathematics, science and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The awards are based on academic merit and cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Perry is a Park Scholar and member of the University Scholars Program. He volunteers at both a local hospital and local medical school and performs research in a campus genetics lab. He has also become proficient in Spanish so that he can work with and translate for patients at a local health-care clinic where he serves as a certified nurse assistant. Perry plans to attend an M.D.-Ph.D. program that will position him to serve his communities through a research-based clinical practice.
