Nickels for Know-How Many of the farmers of the state apparently are grateful for the know-how they get from the research going on through the College. They have voted to pay another nickel per ton of feed and fertilizer to keep supporting that research. The Nickels for Know-How referendum passed in November, with 88 percent of those voting saying "yes" to increasing the surcharge from 10 to 15 cents per ton. The program started in 1951, and since then, many of the state’s research-based agricultural advances have at some point shared Nickels funds. As is required by law, every six years there has been a statewide referendum on the program. All producers or users of feed or fertilizer in North Carolina are allowed to vote in the referenda. The money raised goes to the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc., which in turn distributes the funds through research and extension activities, scholarships, fellowships, faculty support and professorships. In 1998, Nickels for Know-How raised more than $797,000. —Alexandra Mordecai ![]() | |
