Louisha Tenique Barnette of Durham, a sophomore majoring in biochemistry in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at N.C. State University, has been awarded a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship.

A John T. Caldwell Scholar, N.C. State Chancellor Leadership Award winner and N.C. State Scholar, Barnette is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, the National Scholars Honor Society and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. She plans to obtain an M.D. and a Ph.D. and conduct basic and clinical research in degenerative neuronal diseases.

She is the daughter of Effie Barnette Smith of 1659 Worthside Road, Creedmoor, and Thomas Bass of Roxboro, and is a 2001 graduate of Hillside High School in Durham.

The NIH program offers competitive scholarships to undergraduate students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related research. The scholarship pays up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses and living expenses.
