Two College of Agriculture and Life Sciences benefactors were honored November 3 at the joint luncheon meeting of the North Carolina Tobacco and Agricultural foundations.
State Sen. Charles W. Albertson and H. Frank Grainger each received the College's 2004 Distinguished Service Award, presented by Dan Warren, chairman of the N. C. Agricultural Foundation Inc.
Albertson of Duplin County is a sixth-term senator from the state's 5th District, representing Duplin and portions of Jones, Onslow, Pender and Sampson counties. In the state Senate, he serves as chair of the Agricultural, Environment and Natural Resources Committee, vice-chair of Rural Development and member of other legislative committees, where he plays a critical role in ensuring the viability of agribusiness and agriculture in North Carolina.
Grainger, who developed the company Fair Products Inc., is the first nonmember of the N.C. General Assembly to receive the Distinguished Service Award. He is a founding member of the Tobacco Growers Association and a member of the N.C. Tobacco Foundation Inc. and currently serves his second term on the UNC Board of Governors. He is founder and current chairman of Economic Development Coalition 2000, an advocacy group for N.C. State University, has served as chair of the College's JC Raulston Arboretum Gala, and is a member of the N.C. State Grange Tobacco Executive Committee.
Also speaking at the ceremonies were Dr. Robert Barnhardt, interim university chancellor; Dr. James L. Oblinger, university chancellor-designate; and Dr. Johnny Wynne, College dean. Wynne thanked Albertson and Grainger for their support, leadership and advocacy for the College and said, "Both have worked tirelessly for years in and with the North Carolina General Assembly and other organizations for the benefit of our College and all of agriculture in North Carolina."
