Dr. Ken Swartzel, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, has left his role as head of the Department of Food Science. In August, he was named director of the newly established Food Systems Leadership Institute, a national initiative of the William Friday Institute for Higher Education Leadership in the office of the UNC system president.

Co-sponsored by the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges and supported by a five-year grant from the W.K Kellogg Foundation, the new institute's programs are designed to prepare future land-grant university, government and industry leaders to deal with emerging challenges within the food system in the context of larger societal issues.

With Swartzel's departure, Dr. DonnWard, associate head of the Food Science Department, was named interim head of the department.
