Young knitter wins blue ribbon at State Fair

Rachelle, a resident of Chapel Hill, won "Best of Show" this year in the children's crafts category for a cardigan sweater she created for her younger sister.
You might call the family of 14-year-old Rachelle Stickel "close knit." A State Fair champion in knitting and fiber arts, Rachelle has taught younger siblings to knit as well, and several members of her family entered their creations in State Fair competitions this year.
Rachelle, a resident of Chapel Hill, won "Best of Show" this year in the children's crafts category for a cardigan sweater she created for her younger sister. It was her third "Best of Show" ribbon, and of 14 items she entered in fair competitions this year, 10 won a ribbon.
Robin Roper, Extension associate in the Family and Consumer Sciences Department of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, serves as superintendent to oversee many of the crafts and sewing competitions at the State Fair. She and the competition judges were so impressed with Rachelle's skills in knitting and spinning yarn that they say Rachelle's talent is well beyond her years.
