Dr. Joe Hightower, CALS professor of zoology and assistant leader of the North Carolina Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, is the recipient of the 2006 Excellence in Fisheries Education Award from the American Fisheries Society (AFS).

The award recognizes Hightower's accomplishments, mentoring achievements and influence on his colleagues and the field of fishery science. He received it at the AFS Annual Meeting in Lake Placid, N.Y., on Sept. 12. The honor included a monetary award that Hightower donated to the N.C.
