Mark Fleming and Andy Willis are the 2006 recipients of the Distinguished Service Awards, presented by the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc. The two were honored Nov. 8 during the annual joint meeting of the N.C. Agricultural and Tobacco Foundations in luncheon ceremonies at the N.C. State University Club.
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences dean Dr. Johnny Wynne presided as N.C. Agricultural Foundation chairman Fred Burt and N.C. State Chancellor James L. Oblinger presented plaques citing the honorees' outstanding support of the College and university in the state General Assembly.
"For the past 14 years one or both of these gentlemen have worked on behalf of the College and the university. The College has had many great successes in funding from the General Assembly, due in large parts to the efforts of Mark and Andy," Wynne said. "We are very pleased to honor two individuals who have provided and continue to provide great leadership in the North Carolina General Assembly for the citizens of North Carolina."
Fleming, a 1982 CALS graduate in zoology and former executive director of the College's Alumni and Friends Society, is senior director of government affairs for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. Prior to that role he was the UNC system's associate vice president for state government affairs, after serving as N.C. State's assistant to the chancellor for governmental affairs.
Willis, whose 1990 NCSU degree is in political science, is the vice president for government relations for the 16-campus UNC system, acting as its liaison to the General Assembly. He came to that position in 2006 after serving as N.C. State's assistant to the chancellor for external affairs and as one of Oblinger's 10 executive officers of the university.
Oblinger, praising the abilities of Willis and Fleming to build relationships and trust, said, "Each carries himself so well in those ways."
