‘Celebrate N.C. Wines’ offers tastings, food and unique research demonstrations

Despite record-breaking heat, nearly 350 people gathered at the JC Raulston Arboretum on Oct. 7 for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ third annual “Celebrate N.C. Wines” event. Participants enjoyed tastings from 13 different North Carolina wineries, demonstrations of wine and food pairings and an inside look at the College’s viticulture and enology research. Heavy hors d’oeuvres, music and a silent auction rounded out the festivities.

One of the afternoon’s highlights was a presentation led by Dr. Sara Spayd of the Department of Horticultural Science and Dr. MaryAnne Drake of the Department of Food Science. Spayd gave a brief talk, “A World of Grapes,” on the impact of viticulture on the U.S. economy. She also discussed grapes that are native to North Carolina. Drake followed up with a wine and cheese tasting, sharing techniques and offering advice on pairings.

The event also featured the North Carolina Wine and Grape Council’s 2007 awards presentation; this year’s top honors went to McRitchie and Duplin wineries. Keep an eye on www.cals.ncsu.edu/advancement/Ncwines for details about next year’s “Celebrate N.C. Wines.”
