Two student organizations in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the CALS Agri-Life Council and CALS Agricultural Institute Club, have been the catalyst behind a special project — the creation of a new scholarship endowment honoring Dr. Lynn Turner and his wife, Beth. Lynn Turner retired in December as professor and undergraduate teaching coordinator in the CALS Department of Food, Bioprocessing & Nutrition Sciences.

The CALS Academic Programs Office, representing the two student groups, signed an agreement with the North Carolina Agricultural Foundation Inc. to create the Lynn and Beth Turner Student Leaders Scholarship Endowment. The endowment was signed during a dinner in celebration of Turner’s retirement, held at Raleigh’s Brownstone Hotel Dec. 1.

The endowment, to be funded by colleagues, friends and family members of the Turners, will fund scholarships to students in the CALS Agricultural Institute and in any four-year major offered by the College who have shown potential in academic achievement, leadership and service. Scholarship recipients are eligible for enrichment opportunities through the General H. Hugh Shelton Leadership Center at N.C. State University.

During Turner’s 35 years as a CALS faculty member, he served as adviser for the Agricultural Institute Club for more than 20 years. According to a tribute on the club’s Web site, Turner “devoted his life to helping students pursue their educational, vocational and personal goals, while mentoring current and future leaders. He … taught us very important leadership skills that have enriched our lives. …We know that our lives and those of many students before us are better because of the privilege we had to call Dr. Turner our adviser and friend.”

The new endowment, the site said, will not only celebrate “Dr. Turner’s exemplary career,” but will be “a lasting tribute to a notable educator and mentor.”
