South Central advisors are ‘Hungry to Help’ those in need

Children who rely on school meals for food will have an easier time getting through the weekends, thanks to the efforts of about 120 volunteers with N.C. Cooperative Extension. In late January, these advisers and extension employees gathered to package more than 3,500 meals that will provide some weekend meals for school children in extension’s South Central District.

Eleven years ago, North Carolina Cooperative Extension launched the newsletter Extension’s Successful Gardener to address the high demand for gardening information across the state. Founding editor Leah Chester-Davis has joined with team member, Extension agent and acclaimed garden-book author Toby Bost to produce a book with some of the newsletter’s best material.

NC Choices, CEFS to host meat conference in March

Registration is now open for the Carolina Meat Conference, March 25-27 in Concord. This first-ever statewide conference on meat production is sponsored by NC Choices and the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.

Grower sees bright future for N.C. pecan orchards

Were it not for N.C. State University and its Cooperative Extension Service, a thriving 10-acre pecan orchard near Goldsboro most likely wouldn’t exist, says owner Tim Haithcock. A lawyer by day, Haithcock began his orchard 15 years ago with little more than a piece of land and a green thumb.

N.C. State University dedicates first ‘green’ building at Eastern 4-H Center

The facility that is expected to be N.C. State University’s first “green” LEED-certified building was dedicated Jan. 6, but it isn’t on campus. The conference center at the Eastern 4-H Educational Center in Tyrrell County was dedicated before a crowd of 300, including 4-H’ers, N.C. State’s Chancellor Randy Woodson and N.C. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall.
The conference center is awaiting LEED certification — Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design — the rating system for green buildings created by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Webinar offered on new food safety act

N.C. Fresh Produce Safety Task Force will host a free webinar to learn more about the recent Food Safety Modernization Act Jan. 26 at 3 p.m. There will be opportunities during the presentation to interact with the presenters and ask questions about the Food Safety Modernization Act.
