The smells wafting through the air at the North Carolina 4-H Cookery competition were nearly enough to break down a vegetarian. The parents and friends wading through the aromas were struck by the intensity of each scent as they wandered towards one booth for a sample… and then on to the next. Those smells were of pork, turkey, chicken and beef – all prepared in different and exciting ways by kids and young adults, ranging in age from 9 to 18, for a panel of judges.
Dr. Claudette Smith, interim associate administrator and program leader for Family and Consumer Sciences and 4-H for The Cooperative Extension Program at N.C. A&T State University, was one of two members of Extension faculties at 1890 land-grants honored with an Association of Extension Administrators Chairman’s Award at the AEA’s annual meeting in St. Louis, June 26 – July 1.
University Dining and North Carolina Cooperative Extension will partner to offer Cook Smart, Eat Smart to N.C. State students this fall. The partnership will provide students with an opportunity to learn healthy cooking techniques.
On April 16, Seth Holt was working on his farm in Lee County, when he saw a dark cloud headed his way. Holt, a Lee County agricultural Extension agent, took shelter from what turned out to be a major thunderstorm on his farm. But later he realized how lucky he had been when he saw the devastation that tornadoes had done to his county.
Dr. Andrew Behnke recently won the national 2011 eXtension Community of Practice Achievement Award. He was cited for his “technological innovation and extraordinary inclusiveness and generosity in sharing his skills and resources at the local, state and national levels.”
