Alamance 4-H’ers win state wildlife competition

A team of Alamance County 4-H’ers took first place in the state 4-H Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program competition in April and will move on to represent North Carolina at the National 4-H WHEP Invitational this summer.

WVa workshop will address firewood processing

Extension agents and firewood-related businesses are invited to attend the Profitable Firewood Processing Workshop, Sept. 27, at the Wood Education and Resource Center, Princeton, W.Va. The day-long workshop (9 a.m. – 4 p.m.) is hosted by the Wood Products Extension Department at North Carolina State University, Wood Education and Resource Center and Independent Sawmill and Woodlot Magazine.

Four North Carolina 4-H’ers and their coach were among youth from 15 states competing in the 33rd National 4-H Forestry Invitational, held July 22-26 in West Virginia. Teams from Tennessee, Alabama and New York placed first, second and third, respectively.

Oh Deer: Protecting this year’s Christmas tree crop

Hair clippings, cayenne pepper and raw eggs – these are just a few of the odd ingredients recommended to keep those pesky deer away from your backyard garden. But what about farmers who have hundreds of acres of Christmas trees to protect? North Carolina State University Extension specialists have now found an effective, inexpensive alternative to available commercial products to keep the deer at bay.
