Lowe named Currituck County Extension director
Date posted: October 5, 2010
Cameron S. Lowe, a former biotechnology teacher and 4-H agent, became the director of the N.C. Cooperative Extension center in Currituck County on Sept. 17.
Lowe’s appointment was announced by Currituck County manager Dan Scanlon and Dr. Joe Zublena, interim director of the N.C. Cooperative Extension Service with N.C. State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Lowe succeeds Rodney Sawyer, who retired as Currituck County Extension director in 2009 after 31 years of service.
Lowe returns to Cooperative Extension work after serving as a 6th through 8th grade biotechnology teacher for Currituck County schools since 2005. She previously worked as a 4-H agent, first in Dare County from 1998 to 2001 and then in Pasquotank County from 2001 to 2005.
Lowe graduated from Currituck County High School and holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from N.C. State University.
Dr. Travis Burke, director of Cooperative Extension’s Northeast District, which includes Currituck County, said Lowe brings energy and experience to the leadership position.
“Cameron brings a unique blend of Extension experience and advanced technology skills gained during her seven years as an Extension agent and five years as a biotechnology teacher,” he said. “She will be an energetic force in extending world-class knowledge and education from our state’s land-grant universities to the local community.”
Cooperative Extension is an educational agency supported by county governments, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, N.C. State University and N.C. A&T State University. A staff of agents serves each county and the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation. Backed by specialists at the two land-grant universities, agents conduct educational programs related to agriculture and forestry, natural resources, family and consumer sciences, 4-H, community and rural development and other issues of concern to North Carolina’s people.
