Date posted:

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences was recognized for efforts to promote equity, diversity and inclusion by the North Carolina State University Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity with a 2012 Diversity Award in the college/division category.

The Office for Institutional Equity and Diversity annually recognizes outstanding efforts aimed at promoting diversity by faculty, staff, students, colleges/divisions and student organizations. Colleges or divisions are judged on five criteria. Winners must:

  • Demonstrate a consistent pattern of commitment to the recruitment, retention and promotion of individuals of underrepresented populations;
  • Cultivate and promote diversity initiatives that establish and foster a more inclusive and equitable work environment;
  • Exhibit visionary and insightful leadership to confront and resolve inequities through strategic decision-making, allocation of resources and establishment of priorities;
  • Outline defined goals, actions steps and accomplishments toward achieving a work and academic environment that recognizes, promotes and encourages a diverse workforce; and/or
  • Demonstrate progressive best practices that support equity, diversity and inclusion goals.

CALS diversity programs are led by Dr. Lisa Guion, assistant dean for diversity, outreach and engagement, and a 24-member Diversity Council made up of faculty and staff.

“CALS is viewed as a leader in innovative, strategic, results-driven diversity initiatives on this campus, and this award is evidence of that,” said Guion.

The award carries a $1,000 cash prize, which Guion said will be used to advance the diversity initiative in the college.
