Prestage family teams with NC State for holiday turkey challenge
As part of a fundraising campaign through the North Carolina State University Annual Giving Program, the Prestage family – who recently made a $10 million gift to endow the Department of Poultry Science – donated 200 turkeys to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.
During the “Recent Grad Holiday Turkey Challenge,” if at least 300 recent NC State graduates made a gift to the university between Nov. 15 and Dec. 15, the Prestage family would donate 200 turkeys to the Food Bank. An alumni task force led the campaign, using email, social media and phone calls to secure the donations. The turkey challenge was a success, with participation by 328 donors (the total amount of money raised is not yet available).
Representatives of the Prestage Family Department of Poultry Science, the NC State Annual Giving Program and Prestage Foods were on hand at the Food Bank for delivery of the turkeys.
“We don’t usually see a lot of turkey donations here,” said Carter Crain, food resources manager for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, which serves half a million people each year. “Meat is highly sought-after because that protein is so important for families in need.”
According to Crain, the turkeys will be made available immediately to select agencies, including soup kitchens, churches and shelters.
“We’re very appreciative of the Prestage family and the folks from NC State for this donation,” Crain said. “We can’t wait to give out these turkeys.”
