Date posted: January 2, 2013
Dr. Steven Lommel, associate director of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service and North Carolina State University assistant vice chancellor for research, has been accepted to the two-year Food Systems Leadership Institute program.
The program is designed to enhance personal and professional development in higher education, government and industry by emphasizing leadership competencies, skills for organizational change and a broad, interdisciplinary perspective of food systems. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Lommel is a William Neal Reynolds Professor of plant pathology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
The Food Systems Leadership Institute experience is designed to prepare participants for upper-level leadership roles in food system programs and to assume broader leadership responsibilities within their own organizations. Lommel is part of a 21-member 2012-2012 institute cohort.
Year one includes intensive executive education-style residential learning sessions at three universities. Participants perform assessments to better understand their leadership styles, and the results are used to create personal development plans, prepared with the assistance of a professional coach. Between residential sessions, participants engage in interactive distance learning. During year two, participants apply what they have learned to develop and carry out an individual leadership project.
The institute is a program of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, with initial funding provided by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. N.C. State University is the host site, while The Ohio State University and California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo are residential sites responsible for program implementation. The institute is dedicated to advancing and strengthening food systems by preparing leaders with the skills and knowledge needed for the food systems of the future.
