Thomas L. Dyson has been named to direct the North Carolina Cooperative Extension program in Lincoln County.

Dyson’s appointment as Lincoln extension director was announced by Dr. Joe Zublena, director of the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service at North Carolina State University, and Tracy Jackson, Lincoln County manager.

Dyson succeeds Kevin Star, who retired in January 2014 after 23 years with Cooperative Extension. Dyson’s appointment is effective August 1.

Dyson most recently served as founder, coordinator and professor of ENTRA (National Missions School) in Oaxaca, Mexico. He also has served as interim director of and seminary professor at the Baptist Theological Seminary in Oaxaca. Before his time in Mexico, Dyson was agricultural consultant and educator with the International Service Corps in Merida, Venezuela, and extension horticulture agent in three North Carolina counties: Chowan, Gates and Perquimans.

He holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in horticulture from Virginia Tech University, as well as a master’s degree in intercultural studies from The College at Southeastern.

Dyson brings strong leadership skills to the Lincoln County Extension center, said Clinton McRae, director of Cooperative Extension’s South Central District, which includes Lincoln County.

“We are extremely excited for the Lincoln County team,” McRae said. “Tom has significant experience in building teams, securing resources and developing educational programs. Most important, Tom has a special passion for helping people, and he will be a great asset to the county.”
