Horn of Plenty is Extension’s big ‘thank you’ to counties
Amidst dinosaurs, whales and science of all descriptions, more than 500 guests – county commissioners and their families – enjoyed all the features of Raleigh’s newest museum at N.C. Cooperative Extension’s annual Horn of Plenty dinner Aug. 17. The appreciation dinner is held during the N.C. Association of County Commissioners’ annual meeting.
Ristaino named Jefferson Science Fellow
Dr. Jean Beagle Ristaino, William Neal Reynolds Distinguished Professor of Plant Pathology, has been named a 2012 Jefferson Science Fellow. Ristaino will spend the next year working as a science adviser to the U.S. Department of State in Washington D.C. and traveling to U. S. embassies and missions overseas. She will then serve in a consulting capacity to the State Department for an additional five years.
Ask an Expert All Stars honored for service
Linda Brandon, Master Gardener volunteer coordinator for N.C. Cooperative Extension in Guilford County, is at her computer quite a bit, assisting county homeowners with home garden questions. Brandon was among five N.C. Cooperative Extension professionals recognized as Ask an Expert All Stars by Extension Information Technology for quick responses to client questions asked through Extension’s Ask an Expert widget over the past year.
Land-grant universities honored with Borlaug Medallion
In recognition of the many contributions that land-grant universities like N.C. State University have made to improving food production, the World Food Prize has awarded its Borlaug Medallion to U.S. land-grant universities. This year, as N.C. State celebrates its 125th anniversary, land-grant universities across the country also are celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Morrill Act of 1862 that started the land-grant system.
Innovation fund announcement among highlights of gala celebration for Dean Johnny Wynne
Dr. Johnny Wynne, who retired this summer as dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, was honored June 12 at a gala celebration at N.C. State University’s McKimmon Center.
Specialists receive program awards
An individual specialist and a team were recognized for program excellence at the May 15 meeting of the N.C. Association of Cooperative Extension Specialists. Robert Bardon received the Individual Program Award and members of the Livestock/Forage Agent Training Conference team received the Team Award.
CEFS receives regional Magrath Award
Two North Carolina land-grant universities affiliated with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) – N.C. State University and N.C. A&T State University –were among those named regional winners of the C. Peter Magrath University Engagement Award for 2012, presented by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU).
CALS students, faculty, alumnus among 2012 GSD honorees
On April 25, the N.C. State University chapter of Gamma Sigma Delta, the Honor Society of Agriculture, recognized academic achievement and contributions to agriculture.
Dairy Science Club hosts regional American Dairy Science Association meeting
Student members of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences’ Dairy Science Club played host to 120 students and faculty advisers from nine colleges and universities.
Nominate candidates for specialists awards by April 30
Nominations are being accepted for awards given by the North Carolina Association of Cooperative Extension Specialists. Winners will be recognized at the May 15 meeting of NCACES and will receive a cash award.
