Faculty, students honored at joint society meetings

Two College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty members were among award winners while three CALS students were scholarship winners at the joint annual meetings of the American Society of Agronomy, Crop Science Society of America and Soil Science Society of America.

In celebration of his scholarship and dedication to teaching, Dr. David Jones of North Carolina State University, Department of Agricultural and Extension Education, was named the 2013 recipient of the Excellence in College and University Teaching Award in the Food and Agricultural Sciences New Teacher Division.

Gentry honored, new Pullen Society initiative launched at CALS fall joint foundations luncheon

“Preparing the Way,” a campaign initiative for the foundation boards of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences to join N.C. State University’s Pullen Society, was launched Nov. 7. The foundations also presented the annual Distinguished Service Award to Jimmy Gentry, president of the State Grange.

Hightower receives NCSU Libraries Faculty Award

Dr. Joseph E. Hightower, professor of applied ecology and assistant leader of the NC Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, is a 2013 recipient of the NCSU Libraries Faculty Award.

Alumnus Kendall Hill wins national volunteer award

Kendall Hill, a 1962 graduate of the college’s Department of Horticultural Science and co-owner of Tull Hill Farms, recently won a Volunteer Service Award from the National Agricultural Alumni and Development Association.

Preserving international forests, providing food security and addressing issues of global climate change will require a coordinated effort, Frances Seymour, former director of the Center for International Forestry Research in Indonesia, told an audience at N.C. State University’s 2013 Borlaug Lecture. And before the lecture, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences entomologist Dr. Fred Gould received the Borlaug Excellence in Service to Society and the Environment Award.

Ag agents receive state, national awards

Seven agricultural agents with North Carolina Cooperative Extension have received awards from the North Carolina Association of County Agricultural Agents. All of the state winners will be recognized as national winners in September.
