Tobacco program endowment honoring Collins announced at CALS foundations spring meeting

The April 23 joint meeting of the N.C. Agricultural, Dairy and Tobacco foundations in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences brought good news for the CALS tobacco program. During the groups’ luncheon at the N.C. State University Club, a memorandum of understanding was signed between Dr. William K. Collins Sr. and Ann T. Collins and the N.C. Tobacco Foundation Inc. to create the Dr. William K. Collins Tobacco Agronomist Position in Research, Teaching and Extension Endowment.

4-H scholarship endowment created by Wilson couple

The endowment will be used to provide scholarships for Wilson County 4-H’ers enrolled in an agriculture, business or health sciences undergraduate or two-year curriculum in any school in the UNC system or N.C. Community College system — including the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and its Agricultural Institute.

‘Apostle for horticulture’ Bryce Lane creates student travel endowment

During his 32-year career, Bryce Lane led students on many national field trips and competitions, as well as international excursions, where he introduced students to world horticulture practices. Creating a fund to support travel opportunities for horticulture students seemed a natural choice as his parting gift to the Department of Horticultural Science when he retired.

$3 million gift to CALS from alumni couple will seed rural student access initiative at N.C. State University

The gift from Dr. Joseph K. and Deborah Kapp Gordon of Raleigh to the university’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will support a number of initiatives to better prepare rural North Carolinians for acceptance to – and then the rigors of – N.C. State.

The Retiree and Donor Appreciation Event, celebrating the contributions of donors and retirees to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, this year included an opportunity for the guests of honor to participate in a special Cooperative Extension Visioning Initiative.

Swartzel retirement, FSLI anniversary, APLU endowment are celebrated

The APLU FSLI Endowment will support the APLU Food Systems Leadership Award and future enhancements. Swartzel directed the FSLI from its founding until his recent retirement.

The Wayne and Judy Skaggs Endowment for Water Resources and the Hydrology of Poorly Drained Lands was created Nov. 9 as part of festivities in commemoration of Skaggs’ career.

New scholarship endowment honors 4-H’s Thearon and Vanette McKinney

The contributions to 4-H of Vanette and Thearon McKinney were celebrated Sept. 7 at the JC Raulston Arboretum.

The endowment will provide opportunities for N.C. 4-H members to attend the American Youth Foundation Leadership Conference.
