National Farm Safety & Health Week: NC celebrates with new safety grant

As fall harvest gathers momentum, the N.C. Agromedicine Institute encourages North Carolina farm families to focus on farm health and safety during National Farm Safety and Health Week, Sept. 15-21. The institute’s mission is to develop solutions for agricultural hazards, collaborate on strategies for preventing injury and illness, and work with communities to promote health and safety through its research, education and intervention programs.

Dr. Steven Lommel has been named associate dean and director for the N.C. Agricultural Research Service in N.C. State University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, effective Sept. 1.

Preserving international forests, providing food security and addressing issues of global climate change will require a coordinated effort, Frances Seymour, former director of the Center for International Forestry Research in Indonesia, told an audience at N.C. State University’s 2013 Borlaug Lecture. And before the lecture, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences entomologist Dr. Fred Gould received the Borlaug Excellence in Service to Society and the Environment Award.

Modernizing Food Safety

It’s been called the biggest change to food safety and farming practices in modern history. And though it’s been more two and a half years since the Food Safety Modernization Act was signed into law, there is still much work to be done. The good news is that in North Carolina, organizations that support agriculture haven’t been sitting on their hands. Groups like CALS, the N.C. Farm Bureau and the N.C. Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services have been active in helping to shape regulations and educate growers on how the Food Safety Modernization Act will affect the way they do business.

N.C. State University Turfgrass Field Day is Aug. 14

N.C. State University’s Turfgrass Field Day will be held in Raleigh at the Lake Wheeler Turfgrass Research Lab, Aug. 14, 8:30 a.m. – 2 p.m. The field day is held once a year and offers the industry and general public a chance to view the Turfgrass Program’s ongoing research trials and speak directly with N.C. State faculty and staff.

Faculty/staff garden workday planned for July 10

On Wednesday, July 10, faculty and staff are invited to N.C. State’s Agroecology Education Farm from 8 a.m. until noon to tend crops that are being grown by University Dining for use in campus dining halls. When produce is harvested later this summer, it will be the first time that campus-grown produce is served in campus dining halls.
