Mark Weathington, a horticulturist with more than two decades of experience, has been named director of the acclaimed JC Raulston Arboretum at NC State University.
The Linda and Theodore (Ted) Bilderback Endowment for the JC Raulston Arboretum Children’s Program will be a “legacy to future generations of budding horticulturists.”
Forget the vernal equinox. For multitudes of gardening enthusiasts, the true first day of spring is the day of the annual Gala in the Garden at N.C. State University’s JC Raulston Arboretum. This year the theme of the May 4 gala was “Celebrating North Carolina,” so the emphasis was on the state’s finest food, botanicals, products and people.
Delectable food, musical entertainment and a silent auction featuring unusual plants and an eclectic array of gift items will be showcased at the annual Gala in the Garden at the JC Raulston Arboretum at North Carolina State University. The public event will take place May 4 from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Featuring the JC Raulston Arboretum’s annual plant sale, bird house competition displays, gardening demonstrations, children’s activities, local arts and crafts vendors, gourmet food trucks and more, the Raulston Blooms & Birds Garden Festival will be held Sat., April 5, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the JC Raulston Arboretum (JRCA).
What began as an innovative new teaching model nearly 10 years ago has evolved into the Hands-on Nursery, a full-fledged operation run almost entirely by students in Dr. Helen Kraus’ nursery management and nursery production classes in N.C. State’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
The April 28 Gala in the Garden, the annual garden party and fundraiser at JC Raulston Arboretum, came with cool temperatures and April showers, yet it was as magical and beautiful as ever. This year’s theme was “An Asian Reflection.”

The JC Raulston Arboretum at N.C. State University has been recognized for its outstanding appearance by the City of Raleigh. The arboretum received a 2012 Sir Walter Raleigh Award in the category of Maintained Outstanding Appearance. Awards in this category are for projects that are more than five years old and have consistently maintained a high quality appearance contributing to Raleigh’s image.
Nearly 100 different cultivars of poinsettias will be on display from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday Dec. 4 at N.C. State University’s JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh. Stop by to see the 9′ tall poinsettia tree, enjoy poinsettia gardens and decorated poinsettias and help decide which poinsettias are North Carolina’s favorites.
