Operation Military Kids — in partnership with the Durham Bulls and Wells Fargo – is sponsoring a special night at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park Wednesday, Aug. 24, as the Bulls take on the Norfolk Tides at 7:05 p.m. Fans who bring items for the

Operation Military Kids is a program of N.C. 4-H Youth Development that supports youth who have a family member deployed overseas or recently returned from military deployment. 4-H’ers around the state create Hero Packs – backpacks with communication supplies and a personal letter of thanks – for military youth in North Carolina.

“Hero Packs are a tangible way for 4-H’ers to thank military youth for the sacrifices they make while their love ones are deployed,” said Scott Enroughty of N.C. State University’s Department of 4-H Youth Development and Family & Consumer Sciences. “These backpacks contain items designed to keep youth connected with their deployed loved ones.”

Each year, North Carolina OMK distributes about 1,500 Hero Packs to military youth, Enroughty said. North Carolina is the nation’s fourth largest state in military population, and home to more than 109,000 military youth.

Hero Pack supplies include envelopes, stationary, disposable cameras, HERO pins, journals and writing instruments. A handwritten letter to the military youth recipient from a non-military youth personalizes the expression of support.

To support this effort and earn a ticket to the Bulls game Aug. 24, bring items from the list below to OMK tables outside the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Patrons will receive a free ticket when items are dropped off.

Hero Packs are age appropriately designed for children 2-5 years old; 6-8 years old; 9-12 years old and 13-19 years old.

The following items are suggestions for the Durham Bulls Hero Pack Collection Event. The list is also available online at the Durham Bulls’ website.
