Cooperative Extension's Successful Gardener Learning Center Presents New Feature This Year: 2008 Showstopper Plants

Raleigh, NC – Whether it’s a question about how to make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood, what to plant that is drought-tolerant, how to deal with insect pests or any other question about gardening, Extension’s Successful Gardener Learning Center is the place to get your gardening questions answered at the Southern Ideal Home Show at the State Fairgrounds in Raleigh, April 4 through 6.

The Learning Center is an annual feature of the Southern Ideal Home Show and is hosted by Extension horticulture agents and Master Gardeners. They will be available to talk gardening throughout the show, which begins at 12 p.m. on Friday, April 4, and runs through 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 6. Look for them in Dorton Arena.

A new feature at the Learning Center will be the 2008 Showstopper Plants, five plants nominated by members of the North Carolina Nursery and Landscape Association and selected in cooperation with North Carolina Cooperative Extension horticulture experts. These are must-have plants that are either promising new cultivars or ironclad plants that will thrive in Carolina landscapes. Stop by the Learning Center and pick up a Showstopper Plants brochure. The Showstopper Plants are drought tolerant and will be featured in the Learning Center along with other drought-tolerant plants for Carolina landscapes. Also available will be the award-winning Extension’s Successful Gardener newsletter, other gardening publications and free soil sample boxes. Register in a drawing for a free one-year subscription to the newsletter, which is also a chance to add your name to a list to receive monthly e-mail gardening tips. Several free subscriptions will be given away during the show.

The Learning Center sponsors are the N.C. Nursery and Landscape Association, N.C. Green Industry Council, which will provide the featured plants, DeWayne’s Home and Garden Showplace, which is providing the containers and patio furniture, and SuperSod, which is providing turf samples so show guests can compare various types of turf.

Tickets are $8. For details, call 1-800-849-0248 or visit www.southernshows.com, where you’ll also find a $1 off coupon.
