Agriculture and agribusiness is North Carolina's leading industry, accounting
for nearly $60 billion of the state's $300 billion gross state product and
roughly one in five jobs. Yet
agriculture is at a crossroads, facing changing technology, world markets,
consumer demands and environmental regulations. Amid these changes,
N.C. State University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences provides
producers and agribusinesses with new knowledge and technology to enable
them to continue producing a stable, safe and affordable food supply
in ways that are economically and environmentally sustainable.
Through our academic
programs, tomorrow's producers and agribusiness professionals gain the
skills they need to lead the industry through these changes. Meanwhile,
our scientists use the latest scientific tools to find innovative solutions
to production challenges, whether by developing hardier breeds, finding
better ways to manage animal wastes or using weather-based forecast
systems, satellites and computers to protect crops from diseases and
insects. With
their counterparts in the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service,
they also are developing high-value alternative crops and enterprises,
like aquaculture, specialty crops and agritourism.
